Teleport (Any)

There are many ways for creatures and objects to teleport: Ring, Scroll, Wand, traps, spell, or even getting the Teleport intrinsic from an artifact.

A creature with Teleport Control will get to choose any location on the level, which need not be visible (staying put is allowed). Other creatures, and objects, will go to a random location on the same level. There are some exceptions to this:

  • An evil Scroll of Teleport will force a random teleport, even with Teleport Control.
  • Conversely, a holy scroll, or the Teleport with Control spell, will give a choice of destination even without the intrinsic.
  • The Blink spell allows a controlled teleport, but only to a visible location.
  • The Fetch spell teleports a targeted creature to an open square next to the caster, while any loose objects on the target square go to the caster's own square. (Teleport Control will not protect against this.)

Other constraints:

  • There is no protection against teleporting into water, lava, acid, or traps... much less into the midst of a batch of monsters!
  • However, nothing can teleport to a spot blocked by solid rock, walls, doors, a boulder, or any creature. A controlled teleport will simply fail if the chosen spot is blocked.
  • There is no way to teleport between levels.
  • A creature with the Position Fixed intrinsic, or an artifact granting that intrinsic, cannot teleport by any means ("you shake").
  • There are a few (very special) rooms which cannot be teleported into, and some deep dungeon levels which forbid teleportation altogether.
