Digging (Any)

There are several ways to dig your own pathways through the dungeon:

  • A Wand of Digging fires a ray which digs out to a 6 square range. It can also dig upwards, downwards, or at yourself.
  • The Dig spell will dig for 1 square in any direction, including diagonally, upwards, downwards, or at yourself.
  • A wielded Earth Hammer, or any artifact granting the Can Dig intrinsic, will allow you to dig in any direction on your level, but not upwards, downwards, or at yourself. You can only dig diagonally if you can move diagonally.

Regardless of method, digging has the same, mostly useful, effects:

  • Digging will destroy walls, tunnel through stone, and shatter viewports. Secret doors will be revealed but undamaged.
  • Digging will destroy boulders, but does not affect other items.
  • Digging at an Earth Elemental will deal 1d50+50 damage to the elemental (you can miss). If you're using an Earth Hammer or have Can Dig, any melee attack will do this damage.
  • Digging upwards (select the "direction" two squares above you):
    • If you are entombed (buried), this will free you, but leave you in a pit.
    • If you are buried under ice, it will break the ice, but leave you underwater.
    • If you are Submerged in water, lava, or acid, there will be no lasting effect.
    • If you are not entombed or submerged, it will dislodge rocks from the ceiling, which will "bonk" you for 2d4 points of damage.
  • Digging down (select the "direction" two squares below you):
    • An ice square will be shattered, leaving water, which you may sink into. (This won't happen if you were already under the ice!)
    • If you are standing on lava, water, or acid, you may sink, but the square will be otherwise unaffected.
    • Ground will become a pit, and a pit will become a hole. This may uncover buried items, notably a new-made Earth Hammer. (If you were already buried, this may trigger a glitch where you create the pit but do not get unburied.)
      • On some levels, digging holes is disallowed, but you can still dig the pit.
      • Except on no-hole levels, a Wand of Digging will produce the hole immediately.
  • Digging at yourself will empty your stomach, costing you 500 Food units. (Unless you're in a non-eating form.)
