Encyclopedia

What better way to scout the passage ahead than a floating eyeball that can move easily though stone? The Wizard's Eye is a phase-shifted version of the common floating eye summoned to do the mage's spying. It is important to remember that while one is peeping in the form of the wizard's eye, one's body is lying helpless where you left it.

Description

Does not require a target. Also works if there is no open square adjacent to the caster. Summons a unique creature, closely resembling a Floating Eye but under your control, and possesses it for 30 rounds (after which it will disappear). This unique Wizard's Eye has 1d5+5 hitpoints, an AC of 4, and a light radius of 2. It can fly across any terrain and even phase through walls. It has the same paralyzing attack as a Floating Eye.

Warning: You will take system shock if the Wizard's Eye is killed, unless you manage to Release it first.

Tips

  • Despite the phasing, the Eye is not invisible, nor protected from attacks! Also, it's deaf....
  • Abandon ship pronto if a monster threatens, and watch out for ranged attacks too.
  • It's not fire resistant either, so don't fly over lava.
  • It may be worthwhile to drop a Wand of Invisibility (or Speed) for it to zap itself before setting out.
  • Besides cautious spying, the Eye can pick up items and bring them to you... or leave them buried in a wall, if you misjudged the duration!
  • However, leaving items buried inside a wall can actually be a useful tactic if you want to cache them out of reach of most monsters. You can easily retrieve them later by casting Wizard's Eye again; they won't be harmed by leaving them there. Deliberately placing items inside of walls in this fashion can be useful for a few other tricks as well, such as creating Golems with Bind Soul.
  • When you explicitly release the Eye, it sticks around, tame, for the duration of the spell (or until killed), using its paralyzing attack on your behalf. If it's within sight, you can even command it as a pet.
  • Spying from outside room corners seems slightly safer.
