Encyclopedia

With greater control over the powers of death, necromancers can extract the souls from dead corpses and use them as fuel. This can be used to transform innocent creatures into sinister pets. It is also believed the soul can be consumed with this spell and used to construct animated golems. While most golems made in this way soon vanish, it is rumoured that more complicated rituals can make stone golems that are permanent.

Description

Can be cast in any direction. The target square must have a corpse, and a living creature on it. The living creature is polymorphed into the same creature type as the corpse, and made into a pet. It's important to remember that when the pet dies, it will revert to its natural form and suffer system shock as you would - and lose the pet status (unless it was already your pet to begin with).

This spell can also be used to target yourself. It functions exactly the same - If you are standing on a corpse, you will be polymorphed into the same creature type as the corpse. If you do use it to polymorph yourself, you will be polymorphed into the creature (that is, no reversion). When you die, you will turn back to your normal self and then suffer system shock. (Note that for once, Polymorph Control will not allow you to alter your target form.)

Unlike normal polymorphing, this spell's effect is permanent, and the target (including yourself) will not randomly revert like a normal polymorph.

Casting bind soul on a creature that has already been transformed with bind soul will cause it to transform back into the original creature before transforming into the new type based on the corpse beneath (so you cannot 'stack' creatures). Note that golems created with bind soul (see below) can be further transformed again by using another corpse AND will keep their pet status when returning to golem state.

This spell can also be used to construct Flesh Golems and Stone Golems, by using specific items in place of the living victim.

In addition, Permanent Stone Golems can be constructed by casting this spell on solid rock. This Golem does not have a summoning timer, and will last until it is killed. There are several ways to manage this:

  • Cast Entomb to create a wall over the corpse, then cast on the wall.
  • Cast Wizard's Eye and use the eye to drop a corpse within a wall, then cast on the wall..
  • Bury the corpse underground (put it in a pit, then fill the pit with a boulder), then cast on the resulting floor tile (without a living victim). This will create a pit with the golem standing in it.
