Encyclopedia
If bringing the dead to life is the ultimate goal of the cleric, the ultimate goal of a necromancer is to bring the dead to undeath. Raise Undead allows a necromancer to infuse the fallen bodies of foes with a sick parody of life. Fresh corpses yield shambling zombies, whilst a necromancer willing to wait for bones will gain fleeter moving skeletons.
Description
Can be cast on any visible square. There must be one or more corpses and/or bones in the target square, but there must not be a monster (including yourself) there already. Each casting produces at most one creature, attempting first to raise a Zombie (from a corpse), and failing that a Skeleton (from bones).
Zombies and Skeletons both fit their standard definitions, except that their maximum HP is the same as the creature you raised. It's hard to say which type is better; Zombies have 4 hit dice to a Skeleton's 3, but zombies are Slow, while skeletons are Breathless. In other respects, they are identical; both have the same base attack and the same base AC, are bloodless, and leave no corpse behind when slain. Both also have Poison Resistance, but are Non-Regeneratable.
Tips
If you have the Possess spell, it may be worthwhile equipping your new servants with spare weapons and/or armour. Besides serving as protection or distractions, either form can be consumed in the Reclaim Soul (zombies are better) or Dark Ritual spells.
As of POWDER 113, you do not gain experience for killing your own undead creatures.
