The dread power of the Cockatrice can be yours. Zapping a foe with this spell starts a process of petrification, wherein their flesh is replaced by solid stone! Cruel mages take advantage of the high black market value for such art.
Description
Can be cast on any visible square in our line of sight. If there is a creature at the target location, it will be given 3 to 5 rounds of the Turning to Stone intrinsic, unless it has Stoning Resistance . When the Turning to Stone intrinsic timer reaches 0, the victim will be turned into a statue, effectively killing it.
Caution: "Killing" a monster this way has two major downsides: You will gain no experience for the kill, and all items the monster is carrying stay with it when it becomes petrified, making them impossible to claim. Amusingly, this can be useful--you can Possess a pet, give it a bunch of items to hold on to, and then petrify it and carry the statue--effectively reducing all of those items to a single inventory slot.
Any items at the target location will be 'petrified' also. A Mound of Flesh will become a Boulder. The Bloody Spellbook will change it's material type from Flesh to Stone, so it's no longer edible. Corpses are turned into a Rock.
This spell will not work against any creature (or item) which is not made of flesh. This includes such monsters as Gold Beetles, Cave Trolls, any Elemental, Ghosts, and so forth. In addition, monsters with acidic attacks (and/or acidic corpses) generally have Stoning Resistance. There are a couple of special cases: Trolls will be turned into Cave Trolls, and Flesh Golems will be turned into Stone Golems.
Learning this spell also learns its useful reverse, Stone to Flesh .
