When Prakal the Earth Mage was faced with a large band of trolls, he did what seemed reasonable to him at the time. A few quick casts of petrify would, he thought, result in a nice addition to his museum of curiosities. Unfortunately, the powerful regenerative nature of trolls prevailed over even Prakal's potent magics. The trolls were petrified into stone. Being made of stone didn't make them any less pleasant, however.
Unfortunately for the world at large, Prakal took the better part of valour and ran away. This left the stone trolls to breed and multiply into what are now properly termed as Cave Trolls.

Additional Information
- A Cave Troll corpse will revive after a certain amount of time passes if not taken care of somehow. The Cave Troll reappears "in perfect shape".
- The Cave Troll's stony body cannot be petrified. But it can be unpetrified!
- Cave Trolls can (only) eat items made of stone.
- They can and usually do use armor and weapons.
Tips and Strategies
- Cave trolls can only eat stone, they can't pick up boulders, and rocks are rare. For vault denizens especially, if you just leave them there a couple of thousand turns, they will be reduced to starvation, disabling their regeneration. (Shame about the magic items they'll eat in the mean time, though.)
- Casting Stone to Flesh will turn it into a regular Troll (whose corpse you can eat)
- There are a number of ways to deal with the corpse:
- Casting the spell Preserve upon the corpse will prevent it resurrecting itself.
- Necromantic options include Raise Undead (zombies only), Ghastify, or Bind Soul.
- If you can manage Resurrect, they make fairly durable pets, especially if you can manage to feed them! (Try standing them over a stack of mounds of flesh, then petrify the square.)
- The Stone to Flesh spell will turn a cave troll corpse into a meatball.
- Polymorphing the corpse into an empty bottle will also solve the problem for you.
- If you can't dispose of the corpse, try throwing it into some nearby acid, lava or water so the Cave Troll has a nasty surprise when it wakes up.
- Failing the above, you can (hopefully) keep killing it until it doesn't leave a corpse. You do get experience for each kill! (But you'll want to swipe that warhammer while it's dead....)
