Monsters by Disposition

This section sorts creatures by their default level of aggression towards the avatar. All creatures except those that can only be summoned are included here. Note that even normally friendly or neutral monsters which you have attacked will become "angry" and attack you, as will any monster summoned by an angry god. Setting the Safewalk option is helpful, but not a panacea: Not only will spells or missiles count as an attack, so will the monster falling into a trap you created. Angry monsters can be pacified (towards you) by turning their attention toward a pet.

Friendly Creatures

Friendly creatures do not attack the avatar unless provoked. If you move into them, they will swap places with you by default (unless they are angry).

Shitomi Triceratops Village Elder

Neutral Creatures

Neutral creatures likewise do not attack you unless provoked. However, moving into them will (by default) attack them. You can use the swap command to switch places with them (again, unless they are angry).

Floating Eye Gelatinous Cube Giant Spider Green Snake
Ice Snake Kiwi Large Bat Mouse

Hostile Creatures

Hostile creatures will pursue and attack the avatar. You cannot swap places with a hostile creature. While they can't be pacified, they can be distracted if attacked by another monster..

Bipolar creatures are neutral unless a certain condition is met (see monster descriptions for details).

Unique Monsters

Any monster (except summoned/conjured monsters and the bosses, all below) can be created as a named, or "unique" monster. These will be much tougher: Their hit dice, magic dice, and overall level are doubled, and on top of that, they get 20 extra HP and (if a magic-user) 40 extra Mana. They usually have extra intrinsics as well: up to 5, but only the "good" ones, including some you can't get from artifacts! (Life Saved, Lichform, and Physical Immunity are particularly annoying.) A unique monster will match the disposition of its base type. Some special rooms always include a named leader.

Boss Creatures

Boss creatures are special, unique, gargantuan creatures that take up a 2x2 space. They are always hostile.

Allied Monsters

This section contains creature types that can be summoned or created by use of a spell. Most of these monsters can also be found as dungeon monsters; notable exceptions are Animated Trees and Wizard Eyes. Living Frosts don't appear directly, but can be summoned by Ice Daemons. There are also three ways to get pets of almost any species; see the Pets page for details

Summoned Creatures

A "summoned" creature is one that is either summoned or created for a limited period of time, usually by casting a spell.

Wizard's Eye Flesh Golem Stone Golem

Conjured Creatures

"Conjured" creatures are those that are either created or permanently summoned, again usually by casting a spell. This section includes undead that can be created, the familiar's evolution line, and permanent stone golems.
